Marine Mammal Surveys
Our fully-qualified marine mammal observers provide mitigation and monitoring services to a range of industries and regulatory bodies.
Our clients include operators in the seismic, subsea cables and offshore renewables industries, government bodies and NGOs.
The teams have expertise in the design, implementation and reporting of Marine Mammal Mitigation programmes to reduce the impact of underwater noise on these animals.
They also provide expert advice to ensure compliance with environmental legislation with a focus on European Protected Species (EPS).
We also provide mitigation and ecological advice through desk-based consultancy services to inform Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and support scientific research programmes.
This includes conducting long-term monitoring programmes, enabling government agencies to provide sound advice on the conservation status, abundance and breeding stock numbers of marine mammal populations in the UK.
Ocean Ecology’s marine mammal mitigation and monitoring services are designed to help:
- Seismic exploration
- High resolution site surveys
- Construction
- Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)
- Subsea cable and pipeline inspections
- Military exercise
- Dredging
Other aspects of marine mammal surveys include:
- Research, population estimates and photographic ID surveys
- Underwater noise monitoring
- Desk-based EIA / environmental mitigation assessment
These are often used to support a variety of licence applications eg European Protected Species mitigation licences, marine licences and protected species survey licences.
We can also provide trained Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) personnel.
We are proud to be sponsors of the Marine Mammal Observer Association.
